OPR Mission Statement
The mission of OPR is:
- The rescue, care and adoption of unwanted and homeless dogs.
- Continued education of the general public on the importance of
- Spaying/neutering
- Positive training methods
- Exercise and appropriate medical treatment with humane care
- The understanding of puppy mills
- To work hand and hand with other ethical rescue groups promoting good working relationships to save more lives so that we can continue our passion that enables small miracles for the dogs and the people who love them.
Ohio Puppy Rescue's purpose is to rescue homeless dogs and Puppy Mill survivors/Breeder releases to be adopted to properly matched families through a multi-step adoption process including dog training and education of the families to ensure permanent placement.
Our History:
- OhioPuppy Rescue (OPR) was established in February, 2008. We obtained our 501(c)(3) status in April, 2010. Our primary focus is the rescue and fostering of puppies, pregnant females, mother's with new litters and motherless litters that have been turned into shelters or found on the streets and puppy mill survivors. Our belief is that a dog who has proper training along with an adoptive family's education of proper care creates the foundation for permanent placement.
- 2008 Adoptions: 45
- 2009 Adoptions: 113
- 2010 Adoptions: 116
- 2011 Adoptions: 158
2011 Accomplishments
- 432 wonderful puppies and dogs to wonderful forever homes. With those 432 adoptions, there are a minimum of 432 people out there educating others on the need to adopt a pet from a shelter or rescue.
- We expanded the Ohio Puppy Rescue Spay/Neuter Fund to include partnership with Pikes Friends, Pike Co. Humane Association, Shawnee Animal Hospital, Animal Shelter Society and Noah's Ark Veterinary Hospital to provide free spay and neutering. Our efforts have now opened up a "no questions asked" service to six Counties in Ohio for those who wish to have their dog altered.
- We work with and support, via $500.00 annual donations each, Pilots N Paws and Animal Rescue Flights. These 501(c)(3) organizations support volunteer pilots who assist with transporting rescues all over the country.
- We supported and celebrated the passing Legislative Bills which are established to improve the lives of dogs living in puppy mills.
- We continue our educational program at the elementary school level in the Columbus area, which focus on puppy mills and the drive to spay and neuter pets. We celebrate the education of over 3000 students. It is our belief that the youth of our country are the ones who will bring an end to puppy mills and request a "Pay It Forward" commitment to all who attend the presentation. This means that over 6000 additional people will learn that Pets Are Not Products.
- We provided financial support to Chances Angel Rescue & Education in North Carolina to help defer medical costs and their efforts to eliminate use of a gas chamber in Person County Shelter.
- We donated three pet recovery oxygen mask kits to three local fire departments.
- We continue to support Suri and her Shining Stars movement because we believe that even special needs dogs deserve a quality of life and a rescue to support them.
What still needs to be accomplished?
- Continue educating the public why spaying and neutering is essential in saving the lives of 3 to 4 million pets per year from being euthanized each year.
- Have Ohio become one of the "puppy-free pet store" states.
- Continue and grow our relationship with shelters to rescue dogs in their care and decrease the number of pets euthanized.
- Find a cure for parvo and distemper.
- End the use of gas chambers for euthanizing pets in shelters
- Continue to pressure state officials to enforce laws protecting animals in mills and shelters.
